Spring Fitness

Spring forward for the time change!  Ummm, heck YES!  One of my favorite things in the world is the spring time change... Long evenings, walking the dogs, warm sunsets at 7pm :)  FAVE

Hope you're using the daylight savings as an excuse to get outside in the evenings and be active.  Although I really struggle during the winter months to move my butt off the couch during the dark evenings, somehow spring motivates me to get back on track.  It seems easier this time of year, and not only because of the threat of shorts and swimsuits!

So enjoy the sunshine and use this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoors :)  Get out of your gym rut and mix up your routine.  Remember you can mix up your walks with short jog intervals, lunges, stretching, a few pushups thrown in to jumpstart that heart rate and boost your calorie burn.

Get after it!

Cardio + Weights

I was reading my friend Karen's blog yesterday... besides being a funny lady, she's also, amazingly, capable of calling a 2 mile jog a "warm-up"  Hmph.  Anyway, in her blog she talks about meeting with a trainer for a body fat assessment, resulting in a new workout plan that includes WEIGHTS in a big way.
Cardio vs. Weights
Cardio is great, it's important, and necessary for losing/maintaining your weight.  It's also good for your heart and lungs.  BUT weights (my favorite anyway) make a huge difference in SHAPING and TONING, as well as allowing your body to burn a bit more calories because they add to your muscle mass.
Intro to Weights for Beginners
Here is the basic full body weight program I put my b.ball girls on for about a month in the pre-season this year.  It's short - about 35 min or so - and it prepares your body for a more targeted and demanding program later by building a strength BASE to work from.  If you haven't lifted before, you need to start small and work up.  I'm a big fan of working as many muscle groups at a time in one exercise as you can.  It saves time, keeps your heart rate up, and helps with balance and coordination as well.
Here goes:
3 sets of 8-10 reps on each exercise
Do one set, immediately move on the next exercise without stopping; your heart rate will stay high!  I've grouped the exercises for you.  Do one set of each, keep moving until you've done all three sets of 10, then move on to the next group of exercises.  Make sure you warm up with cardio for at least 10 minutes before you begin any weight program.  With all weights, keep your knees soft (slightly bent), your pelvis tucked under, and your abs tight to protect your lower back.  Don't lock those knees and sway your lower back!

Group #1
Bicep curls - 3 sets of 10 each arm
Tricep extensions - start with a light weight.  Hold the weight with both hands above your head.  Lower the weight slowly, behind your head, keeping your elbows near your ears.
Lunges - 3 sets of 10, alternating legs

Group #2
Calf Raises - 3 sets of 10 each leg
Abs - 100 reps- lay on your back on a bench, holding the bench next to your head.  Bend your legs and bring knees to chest, lower your feet slowly back to the bench until heels tap the bench.  Do not release the tension in your abs when heels touch the bench.

Group #3
Squat Press with weight.  Watch this clip for instructions on how to do a squat properly.  VERY helpful.  Use a light weight to start and make sure your FORM is correct.  Do NOT let your knees come forward of your toes, try putting a bench behind and sit down/get up a few times to get the feel.  If you lose your balance, the bench will catch you :)  The squat press ends with an overhead press of the bar.  Please watch the instructional video!!!  It doesn't include the overhead press, but is very helpful for form.

Group #4
Bench Press - If you can't use the bar (45 lbs), go lighter and use a spotter to help you if possible.  If you don't have a spotter, just use a light weight or a bench machine for safety.  Remember, this is base strength training, you aren't maxing out just yet.
Lat Pull down - this is a machine - it works the muscles that tighten up the dreaded "bra bulge" area on your back. Bonus!

Remember, if you haven't lifted before, use light weight and focus on your form first and foremost.  There's no prize for lifting the most weight. people :)  Unless you're training for the Olympics...

Add WEIGHTS to your workout

After a week of being sick and lame, I've decided to ignore my still slightly sore ear infection and move on!  A little more sleep may be needed, but most of last weekend I laid around resting and being bored.  It doesn't suit me, and now my back is sore.  So that's it!  I've decided: no more sickness for me.  I just hope my body is listening :)
Monday's Workout:
A few drills with the girls at b.ball practice
50 lunges
brisk 35 min. walk (2+ miles)
20 plies with 10# in each hand (plee-ays if you're not familiar with ballet)
3 sets of 10 curls on each arm (biceps)
3 sets of 10 overhead press (shoulders)
3 sets of 10 triceps extensions
Stretching....
Here's the key ladies, your PACING.  I alternate exercises with NO REST between sets.  Your heart rate will be through the roof and you'll burn so many more calories.
I combined curls with the overhead press, for a total of 6 sets, alternating between exercises
Lunges were alternating legs, 2 sets of 25
I alternated the plies with the triceps extension, which by the way I used ONE 10# weight and held it with both hands.

WHY you may ask, are my weights so LOW?  I've been off for a week, I feel borderline well from my ear infection, and I haven't done much upper body work in the past 3 weeks because of back pain.  SO although I know I could push it, I'm easing in gently.
Last night my back seized up a bit, so I iced in bed, laid on my towel roll (more about that later) and felt 10X better today.  I have to be more consistent with my weights or my back will never forgive me.  The farther you fall out of shape, the harder it is to get back... so don't let it slide!  I'm struggling with that right now.

Eat your pizza!
Today I didn't do any exercise at all.  Not a thing!  Worked all day, quick 30 min nap, then back to school for parent/teacher conferences.  Home at 8pm.  Cleaning the house, feeding the dogs, etc. etc.  The great thing is that I can relax and be ok about taking the day off from exercise.  I no longer feel compelled to get out and run around the neighborhood in the dark, just so I don't miss ONE workout!  Thank goodness for that :)  I hope you feel the same freedom to be well and balanced.
Work out hard and eat well,
XOXO

Taking a Break, Katherine Heigl, and Tom Selleck's Mustache

  Evening Girls ;)
I had big plans for my workout today, but they fell flat...Bummer!  Last night I did my lunges, a couple crunches or so, and patted myself on the back for getting started on my goals.  Today I planned to run a bit with my b.ball team and jump into a scrimmage or two.
WELL it didn't happen.  I started playing and immediately felt something start to give in my back.  So I took a hit to my pride and called for a sub.  Looking like a big wimp isn't my fave thing, but neither is spending the day at the chiropractor's (love ya Dr. Pam!).
So I can pat myself on the back for something else; that is, listening to my body's needs.  I'm not a teenager anymore, and I have WAY TOO MANY old injuries.  More often than not, what I need is a good solid cardio session, but on days like today when something feels off... I have to just let it go and try again tomorrow.
Anyone out there watch the movie with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher called "Killers"?  How great is Tom Selleck's mustache?!  I bet he would have a crazy tan line if he ever shaved it off!  LOL!
Katherine Heigl's character cracks me up when admitting to "sucking it in all night" in her tight dress on a first date.  I have a couple cute dresses that need a whole lot more than me just sucking it in!  I'm determinged to fit into a few of those in time for holiday parties.

Ok, it's bedtime for me :)  Remember to set your weekly goals and try something new and fresh!  I may need to adjust this week for my back and pull out the old yoga DVD.  Let me know how your weekly workout is coming along...
XOXO
